Are you a technical graduate looking to turn your qualification into real workplace experience? Transnet’s Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Trainee Programme offers students and recent graduates the chance to apply their academic knowledge in a genuine operational environment. Running over 12 months, the programme combines hands-on training, structured mentorship and direct exposure to industry-specific tasks, giving participants a strong foundation for future employment.

About the role

As a WIL Trainee, you’ll work under the guidance of the Specialist: Youth Development, gaining practical experience across several key areas:

Task Execution

  • Assist with specific projects within a department or work-stream
  • Perform routine operational tasks under supervision
  • Support administrative functions, including documentation and reporting

Learning & Development

  • Take part in training sessions, workshops and mentorship programmes
  • Shadow experienced professionals to build practical insight
  • Engage in problem-solving activities that sharpen analytical skills

Communication & Collaboration

  • Interact with customers, suppliers and internal teams to understand business needs
  • Provide regular updates on assigned tasks and project progress
  • Act as a central point of contact for queries and assistance

Research & Analysis

  • Conduct market research, data collection and analysis to support business decisions
  • Prepare reports and presentations using MS Office tools
  • Assist with process improvement initiatives

Trainees are also expected to follow company policies, procedures and safety regulations, uphold ethical and professional standards, and maintain confidentiality and integrity in all tasks.

Who we’re looking for

  • Matric certificate
  • B Eng Tech or National Diploma, S4–S5, with all theoretical coursework completed in Electrical (Heavy Current), Mechanical, Industrial, or Engineering disciplines
  • South African citizen
  • Aged between 18 and 35
